The Judges
Open Category

An award-winning photographer, writer and co-founder of Art & Eats, Colin brings decades of experience and a strong belief in the power of visual storytelling.

Under 16 Category
Nicolas Willemsen
A local photographer and animal ecology student, Nicolas’ work is shaped by extensive time spent in wild places, with a particular focus on birds and natural habitats.
What the Judges Are Looking For
Images will be assessed against the following criteria, with equal emphasis on storytelling, technical skill and ethical practice.
(new criteria to be announced soon)
1.
Subject & Behaviour
The animal must be clearly identifiable as the subject, captured engaging in natural behaviour such as movement, interaction, hunting or resting, and presented in a way that feels authentic rather than staged.
2.
Sharpness & Focus
The image should demonstrate strong technical control, with sharp, expressive eyes, motion blur used intentionally if present, and an appropriate shutter speed that suits the animal’s movement.
3.
Light
Effective use of light is essential, with soft or directional light that enhances texture, form and mood, while avoiding harsh shadows unless they are used deliberately for creative impact.
4.
Composition
The photograph should feature a clean, uncluttered background, balanced framing using techniques such as the rule of thirds or leading space, and clear separation between the subject and its environment.
5.
Moment & Timing
Judges are looking for images that capture a decisive or meaningful moment, whether through action, interaction or a compelling pose, resulting in a photograph that feels alive rather than static.
6.
Storytelling
A strong image should tell a story or evoke emotion, showing the animal’s relationship with its environment and providing context without distracting from the subject.
7.
Perspective
Photographs taken at eye level are encouraged to create intimacy, while creative angles that add impact are welcomed, avoiding images that feel like simple “stand and shoot” captures.
8.
Technical Quality
Images should demonstrate sound technical execution, including correct exposure, well-balanced colour and contrast, and minimal distracting noise or digital artefacts.
9.
Ethics & Respect
Animal welfare must always come first, with no disturbance, baiting or habitat damage, as ethical behaviour is considered integral to the value and integrity of the image.
Ethical wildlife practice underpins all judging decisions and is treated as a core requirement, not an optional consideration.
